5 Tips for First-Time Used Car Buyers in Budd Lake NJ
Purchasing your first used car can be a daunting task for some, especially if you’re filled with concerns about vehicle quality. There are plenty of horror stories on the web about vehicles filled with problems right out the gate, not reported by dealerships. That said, we at Motion Kia want to make sure that you have a great experience shopping with us!
We’ve compiled a small list of tips we recommend you employ, even when shopping with us, to make sure you get the best vehicle for your money! Continue reading below to see what we recommend.
1. Find out What you can Afford
The biggest rule of thumb that we can offer you is that you make sure you find out the limits of your budget. You should never take out a loan that will be more than 20 percent of your take-home pay, that’s after taxes of course. You might even want to spend a little less than that. It’s just a fact of life that used vehicles will require a little attention from time to time and so you should prepare for that by finding a vehicle well within your budget.
2. Build a List of Target Vehicles
Look up vehicles that have good reputations and are known to last, and make sure that you check out multiple brands too! You should find at least three vehicles that fall into your target budget before setting out to dealerships. We also recommend you investigate certified pre-owned (CPO) vehicles as well. They have long-term warranties and are backed by both the dealership and the automaker.
3. Check the Vehicle History Report
Unless you’re purchasing your vehicle from a friend or member of your family, it is always recommended that you get a vehicle history report. And while some dealerships, like ours, will provide reports for you, you should always make sure to double check. You can obtain your own copy of the vehicle history report by using the vehicle identification number (VIN) and a qualified source. We recommend CarFax or AutoCheck.
4. Have the Vehicle Inspected
Another key tip for first-time used car buyers is to have the vehicle inspected by a certified mechanic. A pre-purchase inspection can run a price of $100 to $200 and may alert you to issues that you may not spot yourself. It’s a smart investment for those worried about having issues later. Many dealerships, like ours, will let you borrow the vehicle for a time for this inspection.
5. Test-Drive Your Vehicle
A final tip we have to offer you is that you test drive your future purchase, or whatever vehicles you’re inspecting. This will allow you to make sure that your vehicle is the right one for you as well as for you to assess whether the vehicle is in good condition. Some things for you to look out for while test driving includes:
- Is it easy to enter or leave without hitting your head?
- Is there enough room in the front and back for you?
- Is the drive comfortable?
- How do the brakes handle?
- Is the AC cold?
These are just some of the tips we have for those looking to purchase a used or pre-owned vehicle. To learn more tips, or to test drive great used Kia’s, contact us at Motion Kia today!
